Safety – the sixth S in Lean Six Sigma

When setting forth to create a workplace that adheres to the 5S philosophy (sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain), it's also crucial that businesses – particularly manufacturers – also contemplate what many consider to be the sixth S: Safety.

The Lean philosophies encourage the elimination of wasteful processes. However, that doesn't mean companies should begin cutting corners. It's important for businesses to learn the difference between these two ideas – one creates a safe, yet also more efficient workplace, while the other jeopardizes safety in favor of productivity.

“Key components of the 5S philosophy are safety and good housekeeping practices,” adds EHS Today. “Safety is an integral part of the sort, set in order and shine segment of any 5S project. Standardize and sustain refers to methods used to ensure that safety and good housekeeping is maintained.”

Moreover, creating a safe work environment also relieves potential stress points among employees. Workers cannot truly feel content with their jobs if they think their health is always at risk.
