A map used to provide reference to how the workplace is currently laid out, listing types, and areas  where improvements are located, and how they will change in the future. After classifying the items, analyze the document with a critical eye to solidify a strong lean program.

Objectives
Provide a bird’s eye perspective of the area to communicate to others outside the workshop the progress taken at just a glance.


Summary of Steps

  1. Go to the office, process, or gemba (the place the work is done) that you want to document
  2. At the top, document the department being assessed, the name of the process, the date mapped, and finally from what process to what process
  3. Create a bird’s eye view of the area or process
    • Use the given symbols to illustrate opportunities for improvement
