Time Observation Form

Topic
Lean Manufacturing & Classic Kaizen
Summary
The Time Observation Form is used to document tasks with the time it takes to accomplish them, along with a running total. The form allows for you to perform the process up to four times to get an average time for each task.
Objectives
To track and average the number, sequence, and task time of each step of a particular process with multiple samples.
Summary of Steps
- Go to the office, process, or gemba (the place the work is done) that you want to document
- At the top document the process for observation, area, and date
- Observe a process and document the timing for each major step
- Number the task in the left column
- Describe the task performed
- Mark the time when the task ends in the grayed row (which will be your running total)
- After the process is complete subtract the current process from the previous to find individual process times
- As subsequent runs are done, document their task times
- After several runs a more accurate average task time can be calculated
- Total time for observations at the bottom (last recorded running time)
