Summary
Demonstrate the amount of travel performed during a process, machine setup, or changeover using this form. Commonly referred to as a spaghetti diagram, the Motion Diagram is used to calculate and document total distance traveled by an operator so that we may simplify and reduce the waste of motion.

Objectives
Used to model motion during machine setup, changeover of model type, or anywhere excess motion is suspected.

Summary of Steps

  1. Go to the office, process, or gemba (the place the work is done) that you want to document
  2. In the appropriate fields label the process and department to be analyzed
  3. Create a bird’s eye view sketch of the area
    1. Follow an operator with a rolling distance measuring wheel as they perform their task to find out the total distance traveled
    2. At the same time have someone document on the motion diagram the path in which the operator is walking
  4. At the top of the form note the total distance displayed on the rolling distance measuring wheel
